Discover Dinosaur rEvolution at the Horniman Museum and Gardens
Which dino features are better - horns, spikes or quills? Did T-rex actually have feathers? And how did some dinosaurs survive extinction?
When you think of a dinosaur you probably picture green or brown scales, maybe a spike or two. New research has allowed us to get a glimpse of the true, bizarre, and much more feathery nature of the evolution of the dinosauria.
The first UK showing of Dinosaur rEvolution explores the relationship between dinosaurs and birds in a colourful and fascinating exhibition, including five large animatronic models, many accurate cast fossil skeletons and skulls - some touchable, detailed graphics by the acclaimed artist Luis V Rey, dress up, games, and more.
Dinosaur rEvolution is open until 3 November 2024. www.horniman.ac.uk/event/dinosaur-revolution/

The Horniman Museum and Gardens is an inspiring, surprising, family-friendly, free attraction in South London’s Forest Hill. We’ve been open since Victorian times, when Frederick John Horniman first opened his house and extraordinary collection of objects to visitors. Since then, our collection has grown tenfold and includes internationally important collections of anthropology and musical instruments, as well as an acclaimed aquarium, Butterfly House and natural history collection.
Unusually for such an important museum, you can see our collection up-close and face-to-face. You can even pick up, try on and play with some of our objects.

Ethical taxidermy uses animals that have died of natural causes. They are then used to educate visitors about topics in the natural world, the climate emergency and evolution, among other things. You can read more about ethical taxidermy here: www.horniman.ac.uk/story/life-after-death-about-ethical-taxidermy/

Your performance was very nice and I thought the tempo was just right. Many people play early music too fast, so fast that the notes disappear into a rattling noise. On modern instruments, they do the same and then plunk down the pedal to hide everything and mush it all together. I've played the Haydn and JC Bach sonata on my clavichord. My instrument is based on a large Saxon instrument from around the same timeframe. It's interesting how Johann Zumpe took the Saxon clavichord and turned it into the square piano. The square piano became the domestic keyboard instrument until the early 1840s when the upright piano pushed them away just as the piano itself did that to the harpsichord and clavichord. While I don't have a collection of instruments myself, I travel 65 miles to the Frederick Collection and play their beautiful pianofortes. I agree there's a different character between instruments, styles, builders, and time. Playing on their 1805 Brodmann and then playing on their 1805 Katholnig is like night and day even though both were built in the same year.
